Maigret est un jour tiré de sa retraite, à Meung-sur-Loire, par un jeune homme qu’accompagne un vieux notaire de famille. Jean Maura est inquiet ; son père, un important homme d’affaires vivant à New York lui adresse depuis peu des lettres où il se montre angoissé. Maigret accepte d’accompagner Jean Maura à New York. Lors des formalités de débarquement, le jeune homme disparaît. Maigret demande l’aide du capitaine O’Brien, qui est venu autrefois collaborer avec la PJ de Paris sur une affaire internationale…
