Un peu avant minuit, Maigret est réveillé par la sonnerie du téléphone : une jeune provinciale lui demande son aide. Arrivée à Paris le soir même, elle a suivi une amie qui l’attendait à la gare en compagnie de son « fiancé » ; elle s’est enfuie de l’appartement de son amie quand cette réunion à trois a pris des allures trop libertines. Maigret vole à son secours et la conduit dans un hôtel au dessus de tout soupçon. Le lendemain, il est convoqué par le préfet de police. La jeune fille n’est autre que Nicole Prieur, étudiante vivant chez son oncle, maître des requêtes au Conseil d’Etat et qui accuse Maigret « de l’avoir interpellée dans un café et d’avoir tenté de la séduire »…

A little before midnight, Maigret is awakened by the phone: a young provincial girl asks for his help. Having arrived in Paris the same evening, she followed a friend who was waiting for her at the station with her “fiancé”; she fled her girlfriend’s apartment when the get together became too libertine. Maigret goes to her rescue and takes her to a hotel above all suspicion. The next day, he is summoned by the prefect of police. The girl is none other than Nicole Prieur, a student living with her uncle, master of requests to the Conseil d’État, who accuses Maigret “to have approached her in a cafe and tried to seduce her”…
