Maigret a peur

Humiliations et vengeance
Revenant d’un congrès de la police qui s’est tenu à Bordeaux, Maigret s’arrête à Fontenay-le-Comte pour saluer son ami, le juge Chabot. Celui-ci lui apprend que deux meurtres ont été commis dans la ville ; l’une des victimes est Robert de Courçon, un aristocrate excentrique ; l’autre est la veuve Gibon, la sage-femme. Maigret est à peine arrivé qu’un vieil ivrogne, Gobillard, est assassiné à son tour. Le corps a été découvert par Alain Vernoux de Courçon, neveu de Robert, qui confie à Maigret et à Chabot que les assassinats doivent être l’œuvre d’un fou, puisque les victimes n’ont aucun lien entre elles…

Humiliations and revenge
Returning from a police conference held in Bordeaux, Maigret stops at Fontenay-le-Comte to say hello to his friend, Judge Chabot, who tells him that two murders were committed in the city. One of the victims was Robert Courçon, an eccentric aristocrat; the other is the Gibon widow, a midwife. Maigret has hardly arrived that an old drunk, Gobillard, is assassinated in turn. The body was discovered by Alain Vernoux Courçon, Robert’s nephew, who confides to Maigret and Chabot that the murders must be the work of a madman since the victims have no connection between them …
