Drugs and gigolo
At half past four in the morning, Arlette, a stripper at the Picratt’s in Pigalle, goes drunk to the nearby police station. She reports that she overheard a conversation in the cabaret during which a certain Oscar announced his intent to kill a Countess. She is sent to the P.J., where, because of her condition, her statement, also very vague, is given little credit. Shortly after that, one discovers the body of Arlette and, a few hours later, that of a Countess; both were strangled, in the same way, in their apartment.

The building in rue Lhomond, where Paulus rented a room, is closely monitored. One evening, while he is on guard, Inspector Janvier is critically wounded by a gunshot. Maigret decides to conduct the investigation himself and, as his wife is absent from Paris, he settles in the building in rue Lhomond where Miss Clément, the affable but a tad mischievous owner, reigns.

When lovers become blackmailers and assassins
Before being executed, Jean Lenoir tells Maigret that six-year years before he had witnessed a crime, and that, with his friend Victor Gaillard, he had blackmailed the killer for two years before the latter moved away. However, “no more than three months ago”, he met killer at the Two Penny Bar. Maigret discovers this tavern on the banks of the Seine, near Morsang. Every weekend, a few Parisians meet there and Maigret integrates the group, in which he is particularly welcome…

Beaten at one’s own game
Leonard Lachaume, director of a dilapidated and inefficient biscuit factory, was murdered overnight in his bedroom in the family building in Ivry. Called to the scene, Maigret feels a “sense of unreality” in this house where everything is “beyond time and life”: no one cares about the body, the Commissioner is coldly received by Armand, the victim’s brother, and the family remains silent. The first clues lead to believe that theft is the motive.

A peine arrivé, Joris meurt empoisonné.

Maigret investigates around the harbour where people remain silent, whether sailors, like Grand-Louis, or wealthy bourgeois, like Ernest Grandmaison: yet they obviously know many things.
