It took the Moulins police to transmit to the Paris police a sheet of paper announcing that a crime was going to be “committed in the church of Saint-Fiacre during the first Mass of the Day of the Dead” for the commissioner to return to his native village.

At the station buffet of a small border town between Holland and Germany, Maigret, intrigued by an individual’s behavior, tails him until his arrival in Bremen. The stranger, named Jeunet, commits suicide in his hotel room after finding that his suitcase has been substituted for another exactly identical one. Maigret, who made the substitution during the train journey, finds that the suitcase contains only old blood-stained clothes.

Disparu depuis six semaines, Yves Joris est retrouvé amnésique, errant dans Paris. La police constate qu’il a reçu récemment une balle dans le crâne, mais qu’il a été soigné ; des indices montrent qu’il s’est rendu en Norvège. Maigret ramène Joris à Ouistreham, où il vivait avec sa servante. A peine arrivé, Joris meurt empoisonné. Maigret enquête dans le port où les gens se taisent, qu’il s’agisse de marins, comme Grand-Louis, ou de bourgeois fortunés, comme Ernest Grandmaison : pourtant, ils savent à l’évidence bien des choses.

After having disappeared for six weeks, Yves Joris is found, amnesic, wandering in Paris. The police finds that he recently received a bullet in the head, but he was treated; indices also reveal that he went to Norway. Maigret brings Joris back to Ouistreham, where he lived with his servant. They barely arrived that Joris is poisoned. Maigret investigates around the harbour where people remain silent, whether sailors, like Grand-Louis, or wealthy bourgeois, like Ernest Grandmaison: yet they obviously know many things.

Le docteur Mahé, en vacances à Porquerolles avec sa femme et ses enfants, doit interrompre une partie de pêche pour se rendre au chevet d’une mourante. Quand il arrive, la malheureuse est morte, son mari Frans Klamm est parti en virée à Toulon, ses trois enfants, maigres et sales, sont seuls. Il est frappé par la misère de cette famille, à peine acceptée dans la localité. Les vacances se terminent sans regret pour les Mahé, car personne n’a aimé Porquerolles. Quand il arrive, la malheureuse est morte, son mari Frans Klamm est parti en virée à Toulon, ses trois enfants, maigres et sales, sont seuls. Il est frappé par la misère de cette famille, à peine acceptée dans la localité. Les vacances se terminent sans regret pour les Mahé, car personne n’a aimé Porquerolles. Malgré cela, l’année suivante, François Mahé décide d’y retourner, poussé par on ne sait quelle envie de se retrouver dans un endroit où cependant il sent que les choses lui sont hostiles.

A la fin d’une soirée qu’elle a passée, à une table voisine des jeunes gens, en compagnie d’un Levantin arrivé le jour même dans la ville, ils se laissent enfermer dans la cave de l’établissement afin de s’emparer de la recette. Depuis six mois, cinq femmes vivant seules ont été assassinées à Montmartre. Aucun élément n’a permis d’identifier le tueur. A la suite d’une conversation avec un psychiatre de renom, Maigret monte une mise en scène destinée à faire croire qu’il a arrêté le coupable. Il espère que l’assassin, tuant probablement pour s’affirmer, sera blessé dans son orgueil, éprouvera un sentiment de frustration et se manifestera en tentant une nouvelle agression. Après une soirée trop arrosée, le vieux Gassin, en regagnant son bateau, tombe à l’eau et est aussitôt agrippé par un deuxième homme en passe de se noyer. Ce dernier n’est autre que Ducrau, le patron de Gassin. On les repêche et on s’aperçoit que Ducrau a reçu un coup de couteau dans le dos avant de se retrouver dans le canal. On parvient à le sauver et il demande l’intervention de la police, ce qui déclenche l’enquête de Maigret…

After an evening of drinking too much, old Gassin, on his way back to his boat, falls into the water and is immediately grabbed by a second man about to drown. He is none other than Ducrau, Gassin’s boss. They brought back to shore, and one discovers that Ducrau was stabbed in the back before ending up in the canal.
