Une femme à bord, catastrophes en série…
Octave Fallut, capitaine du chalutier « Océan », a été étranglé et jeté dans un bassin du port de Fécamp à l’arrivée de son bateau, après trois mois de pêche à la morue en mer du Nord. Le télégraphiste du bateau, Le Clinche, est arrêté. Un ancien ami de Maigret, instituteur à Quimper, qui connaît bien la fiancée de Le Clinche, demande au célèbre commissaire de prouver l’innocence de ce dernier.

A woman on board, series of disasters… 
Octave Fallut, captain of the trawler “Ocean”, was strangled and thrown into a bassin of Fecamp’s harbour upon arrival of his boat, after three months of cod fishing in the North Sea. The ship’s telegraph, Le Clinche, was arrested. An old friend of Maigret, a teacher in Quimper who knows well Clinche’s bride, asks the famous Commissioner to prove Clinche’s innocence.

Le 7 juillet, à Saint-Cloud, Mme Henderson, riche veuve américaine, et sa femme de chambre ont été sauvagement assassinées. La police arrête Joseph Heurtin, livreur, qui a laissé ses empreintes sur le lieu du crime. Reconnu sain d’esprit, Heurtin est condamné à mort le 2 octobre. Or, pour Maigret, Heurtin est fou ou innocent. Pour le sauver de la guillotine, le commissaire obtient des autorités judiciaires de le faire évader.

On July 7, in St. Cloud, Mrs. Henderson, a rich American widow, and her maid were brutally murdered. The police arrest Joseph Heurtin, a deliveryman, who left his fingerprints at the crime scene. Recognized as sane, Heurtin is sentenced to death on October 2. But for Maigret, Heurtin is either mad or innocent. To save him from the guillotine, the Commissioner obtains from judicial authorities the authorization to help him escape.

Un apprenti espion bien maladroit…
Deux jeunes noceurs endettés – Delfosse, un bourgeois désaxé et Chabot, le fils d’un employé – fréquentent à Liège « Le Gai-Moulin », une boîte de nuit où ils courtisent l’entraîneuse Adèle. A la fin d’une soirée qu’elle a passée, à une table voisine des jeunes gens, en compagnie d’un Levantin arrivé le jour même dans la ville, ils se laissent enfermer dans la cave de l’établissement afin de s’emparer de la recette. Dans l’obscurité, ils entr’aperçoivent ce qu’ils croient être un cadavre, celui du Levantin et prennent la fuite.

Two young indebted party goers – Delfosse, an off-axis bourgeois, and Chabot, the son of an employee – patronize the “Gay-Moulin”, a nightclub in Liège where they woo Adèle, a hostess. At the end of an evening she spent with a Levantine arrived the same day in the city at a table near the young men, they let themselves be trapped in the basement of the facility to grab the day’s earnings. In the darkness, they entr’aperçoivent what they believe to be a corpse, that of the Levantine, and flee.

Quand les amants deviennent maîtres chanteurs puis assassins…
Avant d’être exécuté, le condamné Jean Lenoir confie à Maigret qu’il a été témoin d’un crime vieux de six ans et qu’avec son ami Victor Gaillard, il a fait chanter l’assassin durant deux ans, avant que ce dernier ne déménage ; il a pourtant rencontré le coupable « il n’y a pas trois mois » à la Guinguette à deux sous. Maigret découvre cette guinguette au bord de la Seine, près de Morsang ; chaque week-end, quelques Parisiens ont l’habitude de s’y retrouver et le commissaire s’intègre au groupe, dans lequel il est particulièrement bien accueilli…

When lovers become blackmailers and assassins …
Before being executed,  Jean Lenoir tells Maigret that, six-year years before, he had witnessed a crime, and that, with his friend Victor Gaillard, he had blackmailed the killer for two years before the latter move. However, “no more than three months ago”, he met killer at the Two Penny Bar. Maigret discovers this tavern on the banks of the Seine, near Morsang; every weekend, a few Parisians meet there, and Maigret integrates the group, in which he is particularly welcome…

Une vamp au sang froid…
Carl Andersen et sa sœur Else, danois, M. et Mme Michonnet, Oscar et sa femme, tels sont les couples qui occupent les trois maisons du carrefour des Trois-Veuves. Un dimanche, Andersen découvre, dans son garage, la voiture de Michonnet dans laquelle se trouve le cadavre d’un certain Goldberg, diamantaire à Anversois ; quant à la voiture d’Andersen elle est dans le garage de Michonnet.

A cold-blooded vamp …
Carl Andersen and his sister Else, both Danish, Mr. and Mrs. Michonnet, Oscar and his wife, these are the couples who occupy the three houses at the crossroads of Three Widows. On a Sunday, Andersen discovers, in his garage, Michonnet’s car in which lies the corpse of Goldberg, a diamond dealer from Antwerp; and Andersen’s car is in Michonnet’s garage.

Raymond Couchet, propriétaire d’un important laboratoire pharmaceutique, a été assassiné dans son bureau place des Vosges à Paris. Une importante somme d’argent a été dérobée. Maigret enquête dans l’immeuble où vivent également Edgar et Juliette Martin, cette dernière a été la première épouse de Couchet. Son enquête le conduit à l’Hôtel Pigalle où voisinent, sans se connaître, Nine Moinard, maîtresse de la victime depuis six mois, et Roger Couchet, fils du premier mariage de la même victime… blessé.

Miscalculations
Raymond Couchet, the owner of a major pharmaceutical company, was murdered in his office on the Place des Vosges in Paris. A large sum of money was stolen. Maigret investigates in the building where Edgar and Juliette Martin, Couchet’s first wife, also live. His investigation leads him to the Hotel Pigalle where, without knowing each other, Nine Moinard, mistress of the victim for the last six months, and Roger Couchet, son of the victim’s first marriage, both live. Roger Couchet has been injured…

Il aura fallu que la police de Moulins transmette à la PJ une feuille quadrillée annonçant qu’un crime serait « commis à l’église de Saint-Fiacre pendant la première messe du Jour des Morts » pour que le commissaire retourne dans son village natal.

Where a dinner solves the enigma
The last time Maigret went to Saint-Fiacre was for the death of his father. It took the Moulins police to transmit to the Paris police a sheet of paper announcing that a crime was going to be “committed in the church of Saint-Fiacre during the first Mass of the Day of the Dead” for the commissioner to return to his native village.

Un dimanche d’août, dans sa maison de campagne de La Châtaigneraie, Mme Donge tente d’empoisonner son mari à l’arsenic. Transporté en clinique tandis que sa femme est arrêtée, celui-ci, revenu à la vie, essaie de comprendre un geste qui, aux yeux de tous, semble inexplicable.

One Sunday in August, in La Châtaigneraie, her country home, Ms. Donge tries to poison her husband with arsenic. Transported to the hospital while his wife is being arrested, Mr Donge, alive, tries to understand a gesture which, in the eyes of everyone, seems inexplicable.
