Un dimanche d’août, dans sa maison de campagne de La Châtaigneraie, Mme Donge tente d’empoisonner son mari à l’arsenic. Transporté en clinique tandis que sa femme est arrêtée, celui-ci, revenu à la vie, essaie de comprendre un geste qui, aux yeux de tous, semble inexplicable.
One Sunday in August, in La Châtaigneraie, her country home, Ms. Donge tries to poison her husband with arsenic. Transported to the hospital while his wife is being arrested, Mr Donge, alive, tries to understand a gesture which, in the eyes of everyone, seems inexplicable.
Un apprenti espion bien maladroit…
Deux jeunes noceurs endettés – Delfosse, un bourgeois désaxé et Chabot, le fils d’un employé – fréquentent à Liège « Le Gai-Moulin », une boîte de nuit où ils courtisent l’entraîneuse Adèle. A la fin d’une soirée qu’elle a passée, à une table voisine des jeunes gens, en compagnie d’un Levantin arrivé le jour même dans la ville, ils se laissent enfermer dans la cave de l’établissement afin de s’emparer de la recette. Dans l’obscurité, ils entr’aperçoivent ce qu’ils croient être un cadavre, celui du Levantin et prennent la fuite.
A very clumsy apprentice spy …
Two young indebted party goers – Delfosse, an off-axis bourgeois, and Chabot, the son of an employee – patronize the “Gay-Moulin”, a nightclub in Liège where they woo Adèle, a hostess. At the end of an evening she spent at a table near the young men with a Levantine arrived the same day in the city, they let themselves be trapped in the basement of the facility to grab the day’s earnings. In the darkness, they glimpse what they believe to be a corpse, that of the Levantine, and flee.

Où un dîner livre l’énigme
La dernière fois que Maigret s’est rendu à Saint-Fiacre, c’était à la mort de son père. Il aura fallu que la police de Moulins transmette à la PJ une feuille quadrillée annonçant qu’un crime serait « commis à l’église de Saint-Fiacre pendant la première messe du Jour des Morts » pour que le commissaire retourne dans son village natal.
Where a dinner solves the enigma
The last time Maigret went to Saint-Fiacre was for the death of his father. It took the Moulins police to transmit to the Paris police a sheet of paper announcing that a crime was going to be “committed in the church of Saint-Fiacre during the first Mass of the Day of the Dead” for the commissioner to return to his native village.
