L’enfer sur terre
Émile, ancien ouvrier au naturel bourru, est un homme sans détour. Marguerite, à l’opposé, est une femme délicate, d’une douceur affectée, sournoise et avare. Elle provient d’une famille de propriétaires, dont on démolit les nombreux immeubles dans le quartier. Ils étaient voisins, tous deux veufs, et se sont mariés, lui à 65 ans, elle à 63, peut-être par peur de la solitude. Leur incompatibilité de tempérament ne tarde pas à se muer en sourde hostilité. Joseph, le chat d’Émile que Marguerite n’a jamais accepté, disparaît.
Hell on earth
Emile is a gruff former workman. Marguerite, in contrast, is a delicate, sly and greedy woman. She comes from a family of landowners, whose many buildings in the neighborhood are being demolished. Maigret reçoit successivement la visite de Xavier Marton, un personnage falot et timoré qui accuse sa femme de vouloir l’empoisonner, et celle de Gisèle Marton qui a suivi son mari jusqu’au Quai des Orfèvres. Il annonce son intention de la tuer si jamais il ressent les symptômes d’une intoxication. Il meurt la nuit suivante, empoisonné, sans avoir pu mettre ses menaces à exécution.
Fratricide
Maigret successively receives the visit of Xavier Marton, a weak and timid character who accuses his wife of wanting to poison him, and that of Gisele Marton who followed her husband to the Quai des Orfèvres. In the heat of the nights
A young Frenchman, Joseph Timar, attempts an African adventure in Gabon. Reality (unbearable heat, rejection of the settlers and of the indigenous population) turns out to be very different from his exotic dreams. The murder of a black man is committed. Joseph quickly suspects Adele, the madam of the only hotel restaurant in Libreville, of whom is also the lover.
