Les frères Rico sont trois : Eddie, l’aîné, puis Gino et Tony. Eddie Rico, bon époux, bon père de famille, commerçant aisé, cache sous ces apparences bourgeoises un autre visage, il rackette pour le compte d’une « organisation ». Gino en est également l’un des tueurs attitrés, quant à Tony, il en est le chauffeur, lors des expéditions. Personne n’est au courant de ces activités, sauf leur mère qui vit à Brooklyn, où ils sont nés. Depuis trois mois, on est sans nouvelles de Tony…
