Un soir d’octobre, vers minuit, Hector Loursat, ancien avocat qui vit en reclus, indifférent à tous et adonné à la boisson, est tiré de sa torpeur coutumière en entendant un coup de feu. Au fond d’un couloir de sa vaste maison, il croit voir une ombre qui s’enfuit et découvre dans une chambre abandonnée un inconnu qui meurt sous ses yeux.

The new member of the clan
On an October evening, around midnight, Hector Loursat, a former lawyer who lives in seclusion, indifferent to all and a drunkard, is awakened from his usual torpor when hearing a gunshot. Thinking he saw a fleeing shadow at the end of a corridor of his huge house, he finds, in an abandoned room, an unknown man who dies before his eyes.
