A l’Hôtel George-V, le colonel Ward est trouvé noyé dans sa salle de bains. Par ailleurs, la comtesse Paverini a voulu se suicider durant la nuit précédente. Transportée à l’hôpital, elle part, le matin même, pour Nice, où elle rejoint son ex-mari, Jef Van Meulen, homme d’affaires connu et ami de Ward. Lorsque Maigret arrive à Nice, elle est déjà repartie pour Lausanne sur les conseils de Van Meulen.
