A quatre heures et demie du matin, Arlette, strip-teaseuse au Picratt’s à Pigalle, se rend en état d’ivresse au commissariat de police tout proche : elle déclare avoir surpris dans le cabaret une conversation au cours de laquelle un certain Oscar a annoncé son intention de tuer une comtesse. On l’envoie à la P.J., où, en raison de son état, on n’accorde guère de crédit à ses déclarations, d’ailleurs fort imprécises. Peu après, on découvre le corps d’Arlette et, à quelques heures d’intervalle, celui d’une comtesse ; toutes deux ont été étranglées de la même manière, dans leur appartement.

At half past four in the morning, Arlette, a stripper at the Picratt’s in Pigalle, goes drunk to the nearby police station. She reports that she overheard a conversation in the cabaret during which a certain Oscar announced his intent to kill a Countess. She is sent to the P.J., where, because of her condition, her statement, also very vague, is given little credit. Shortly after that, one discovers the body of Arlette and, a few hours later, that of a Countess; both were strangled, in the same way, in their apartment.

Dans un hôtel de Sancerre où il était connu sous le nom de M. Clément, Emile Gallet, domicilié à Saint-Fargeau, a été tué d’une balle dans la tête et achevé d’un coup de poignard dans le cœur. Maigret apprend que le jour du crime, Gallet a eu une altercation avec son fils ainsi qu’avec le châtelain voisin de l’hôtel. Et le commissaire découvre que Gallet, que sa femme croyait représentant de commerce, ne l’était plus depuis dix-huit ans…
Ce premier « Maigret », ainsi que Le Pendu de Saint-Pholien, seront lancés au cours d’un mémorable Bal anthropométrique, dans la nuit de 20 au 21 février 1931, à Montparnasse où se pressa le Tout-Paris.
