Une femme intrigante
Dans le canal Saint-Martin à Paris, au-dessus de l’écluse des Récollets, des mariniers repêchent le bras d’un homme. La police trouve les autres parties du corps sauf la tête. Maigret, appelé sur les lieux, se rend, pour téléphoner, dans un bistrot du quai de Valmy où la patronne lui répond de façon laconique. Le commissaire y revient le lendemain pour interroger le patron parti depuis quelques jours. Vieillie avant l’âge, s’adonnant à la boisson, indifférente, Aline Calas l’intrigue…
An intriguing woman
In the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris, above the Recollets lock, mariners retrieve the arm of a man. The police find the other parts of the body except the head. Maigret, called to the scene, goes to a bistro on the quai de Valmy to make a phone call, and is met by the owner’s wife who answers his questions tersely. The commissioner goes back the next day to interrogate the owner who’s been away  for a few days. Prematurely aged, drinking a lot, indifferent, Aline Calas intrigues Maigret …

Au buffet de la gare d’une petite ville frontière entre la Hollande et l’Allemagne, Maigret, intrigué par un individu, le suit jusqu’à son arrivée à Brême. L’inconnu, du nom de Jeunet, se suicide dans sa chambre d’hôtel après avoir constaté qu’on avait substitué à sa valise une autre absolument identique. Maigret, qui a procédé à la substitution lors du voyage en train, constate que ce bagage ne contient que de vieux vêtements tachés de sang.

At the station buffet of a small border town between Holland and Germany, Maigret, intrigued by an individual’s behavior, tails him until his arrival in Bremen. The stranger, named Jeunet, commits suicide in his hotel room after finding that his suitcase has been substituted for another exactly identical one. Maigret, who made the substitution during the train journey, finds that the suitcase contains only old blood-stained clothes.
